A magic square is an intricate mathematical equation where all the numbers in a row and a column add up to the same sum. This sum is referred to as the magic constant. Most magic squares are displayed on a 3×3 grid, but some are much larger in size. The use of magic squares has been found throughout history including the Egyptians and Indian cultures. It is believed they were fascinated by magic squares because they believed they held divine powers that could help the individual live a long life free from disease.

The oldest known magic square dates back to Loh-Shu in 2800 BC. It was found on a scroll floating through the Loh River. This particular magic square did not contain numbers. Instead the yang symbols for odd numbers were represented on one side to represent Heaven. The ying symbols for even numbers were represented on the other side to honor Earth.

Magic squares are very often incorporated in grade school math curriculums as they teach children valuable information. Children are able to learn that different combinations of numbers can equal the same sum by completing the missing numbers on magic square grids. Of course magic squares aren’t always as easy as basic math. They are often involved in algebraic expressions.

Magic squares can pose a challenge to children and adults of all ages. They are a very good learning tool as well as a source of entertainment. Completing magic square puzzles can help keep the memory and math skills very sharp. This is important as such skills tend to fade with age. I know I use my calculator so much that sometimes I really stumble balancing my check book without one.

One of the most important things for a new teacher is to have the right learning resources. With all of the advances in computer technology, a lot of people forget the basics. Things like web design, flash animation, Dreamweaver, and all the rest are now becoming a part of high school curriculum. In many ways, the computer is overrated as a learning tool. A lot of information is available, but people often retain that information much better if they are forced to read it out of a book.
